MIDDIE PRIDE

believing in where you are from

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH:

We are looking at a picture of a park that helped raise me, helped me form relationships with friends, build closer relationships with the community, and hone in on all the sports activities that I love to play. I love basketball, and this basketball court was the place where I developed my fondness for athletics, which further propelled me to develop a work ethic that helps me in life today. It's not a concrete ground. It was more of a rubbery floor. We were able to do other things that we enjoyed doing, such as skating on a smooth surface and break dancing.

One of the fondest memories I have of Old South Park is being a little ornery in the park with a few of my friends. And before I got home, my Mom had received three phone calls from people who had stopped me along the way to tell me to do better and be better. By the time I got home, she knew the entire story. And so that really sticks out for me, that there was always going to be a level of accountability in the community, no matter where I was.

Middie Pride for me is believing in where you're from, believing in the community, trusting those that are in charge of you, whether it be pastors, teachers, elders, aunts, uncles. Middie Pride to me is is community looking out for one another, whether that be in school or outside of school in the community
