PEOPLE POWER
Ms. Sharonda
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH:
“This picture is a picture of me and Miss Ivey. I sell life insurance and I stopped by her house because she bought me a shirt she wanted me to have. My job is so much more than selling life insurance; it’s about building community and building relationships.
This picture is important to me, because the way I got into life insurance: I lost my youngest son in 2020. He was murdered. And the only reason I got into insurance is because I had coverage on Brandon. I feel like life insurance is my superpower. I go throughout the community and I help people get coverage that otherwise would not have coverage. This shows people power because instead of a GoFundMe, or a fish fry, I'm equipping the community to be able to be buried with dignity and respect and full coverage. I feel like a superpower for any community is unity, and getting back to a place where we treat each other like human beings, not like a deposit in our bank accounts. Treating people like they’re your uncle, your family member—how you want somebody to treat your family member—that's our community’s superpower as a whole.”
